Protecting

the Environment

To manage our planet’s climate, we must effectively eliminate greenhouse emissions. Zero global net emissions needs to be our collective goal or global warming will continue. Climate models suggest we have, at most, three decades to achieve this. While the warming will be gradual, the longer we wait, the harder it will be to achieve this goal, as some greenhouse gases can last up to 10,000 years in the atmosphere. What’s more, we are already seeing an impact in the catastrophic effects of a changing climate with intensifying wildfires, hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, and accelerated animal extinction.

Our Impact Partners in this portfolio attack distinct parts of this crisis, but share a common approach which is innovative, scalable, and focused on realistic solutions. Knowing that our grants in this space will be a drop of water in the proverbial ocean of climate change, we seek out opportunities where our commitments can have an outsized impact.

  • They are focused on expanding the use of geothermal energy globally. Innerspace aims to make the production of clean, always-on geothermal energy possible at scale in the world by 2030.

  • We believe that geothermal energy can play a critical role in achieving a carbon-neutral future and Project Innerspace’s founder, Jamie Beard, is uniquely suited to tackle this opportunity. By bringing together data on geothermal potential, supporting the development of innovative new geothermal technologies, and leveraging the drilling expertise of the oil and gas industry, we believe this organization is well-positioned to help unlock the potential of geothermal energy.

  • Rewiring America is the leading electrification non-profit, focused on electrifying our homes, businesses, and communities. They develop accessible, actionable data and tools, and build coalitions and partnerships to make going electric easier for households and communities. Rewiring America helps Americans save money, tackle nationwide emissions goals, improve health, and build the next generation of the clean energy workforce.

  • We like the bold ambitions of Rewiring America, and they have just skyrocketed since the passing of the Inflation Reduction Act, which included millions for electrification initiatives. The team is experienced in industry, policy, and non-profits and brings together a unique set of skills and relationships to make a significant dent in this important aspect of reducing carbon emissions in the future.

  • Clean Air Task Force is a non-profit environmental organization that works to help safeguard against the worst impacts of climate change by catalyzing the rapid global development and deployment of low-carbon energy and other climate-protecting technologies through research and analysis, public advocacy leadership, and partnership with the private sector.

  • We really like the truly systemic, collaborative approach to their work, whether that be the bipartisan nature of their government work or the way they are able to bring both industry and government together to work critically on how to tackle these complex, large-scale climate issues. Their founder and CEO Armond Cohen has spent 25+ years dedicated to solving issues in climate and is a passionate and experienced leader with bold ambitions.

  • Their mission is to prevent the sixth mass extinction (and the first human-created one). They are applying technology, entrepreneurship, and open innovation to source, develop, and scale critical solutions to the underlying drivers of extinction.

  • We couldn’t think of two founders better positioned to lead an organization that is working to inspire, cultivate, and mentor the next generation of innovators working on climate conservation. Alex and Paul have decades of experience working directly on conservation efforts, on launching prizes, and inspiring action. Now they are joining forces to help stave off the sixth mass extinction and we are proud to support these important efforts.

  • Evergreen advances climate tech in the Greater Midwest through a philanthropic seed funding model. They support start-ups bringing impactful climate technologies to market and provide both funding and hands-on support to entrepreneurs. Their climate-focused companies have raised over $350 million in follow-on funding.

  • We believe in models that leverage the power of venture capital and entrepreneurship to make positive change at scale happen faster. Evergreen is a non-profit that is an effective and proven feeder into that entrepreneurial ecosystem. They’ve termed their innovative approach “501VC,” playing on the 501c3 and VC models they combine.
