What They Do
Medical debt is the leading cause of personal bankruptcy in the United States, with Americans carrying an estimated $220 billion in total health care debt. Yet, buried inside federal law (Section 501(r) of the ACA) is a requirement that every non-profit hospital maintain a financial assistance policy to waive or discount bills for low-to-moderate-income families. Because these policies are rarely publicized and heavily bogged down in bureaucratic red tape, billions of dollars in eligible assistance remain unclaimed each year, leaving patients to suffer crippling medical debt for bills they legally shouldn't have to pay.
Dollar For is a national non-profit dedicated to solving this structural disconnect by turning hidden hospital policies into active relief. Through a free, user-friendly digital platform and direct patient-advocacy services, Dollar For checks patient eligibility, prepares complex application paperwork, and submits hospital financial assistance requests on behalf of patients at zero cost. By enforcing compliance with existing hospital policies and advocating for broader systemic transparency, Dollar For ensures that health care debt relief is accessible, direct, and fair.
The Leader
Founder and CEO Jared Walker started Dollar For after experiencing firsthand the immense emotional and financial toll of medical bills during a family health crisis. Frustrated by a system that burdens vulnerable families during their most challenging moments, Jared discovered the untapped mechanism of hospital financial assistance and realized that a grassroots, tech-enabled approach could democratize access to relief. He catapulted Dollar For from a local relief effort into a viral national movement by breaking down complex healthcare regulations into simple, actionable steps on social media. Jared’s pragmatic leadership, relentless focus on patient advocacy, and ability to build scalable civic tools have positioned him as one of the country's most compelling champions for patient financial rights.
